The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers is a fantastic organization with more than 47,000 people; both directly or via affiliates. It had been established in 1958 with the purpose to "Ensure justice and due process for persons accused of crime. Promote the integrity, independence and experience of the criminal defense profession. Promote the correct and fair administration of criminal justice."

This is a discussion board for associates to discuss law and its particular application, to share revisions on technologies, methods and hypotheses that encourage criminal defense advocacy; produce conferences, seminars and guides for same; and allow people to get into the web site to find a lawyer in their time of need.

Lawyers that join NACDL (or one of its state affiliates) took their oath of office a stride further, proceeding 'above and beyond' that which is necessary, to the ideal put forth inside the Constitution and Bill of Rights of the United States, that ALL people, the indigent as well as the wealthy deserve due process, which include the lawyer working to the most of her or his abilities; as well as sticking with these credos even in the face of changes to laws and 'streamlining procedures' that threaten to deteriorate these Constitutional guarantees.

Among the list of beliefs that lawyers on this association adhere to is that victims and witnesses must be given compassion, rather than being put on trial themselves; a right to privacy in person, property and communication; a right to counsel of their own choosing- without it being used against them; and a policy of sentencing punishment in keeping with the crime, not mandatory requirements which are unaffected by circumstance or intent.

They advocate prevention and true rehabilitation instead of an incarceration and release method that generally only causes a downward spiral of chronic (and worse) offenses. To develop this in the organization, there are annual awards given to recognize those members which have excelled even at this higher-level of commitment.

As being an open forum, all levels of government- national, state or local, can gain access to or present data that provides additional insights or interpretations of past rulings; scientific communities in forensics or mental and biological health can provide progress in technology or completely new data on research into different conditions and diseases and in what way they can affect or interact with a person's judgment or abilities at any given time.

This allows the organization to share as broadly and speedily as possible innovative info when it becomes available.

In the NACDL website itself, there is an area for members only, where they may privately discuss queries, problems, or new info among their peers so that a consensus can be contacted.

By attempting to uphold the Constitutional view of law, the NACDL hopes to return the country to the principals on which it was founded, and never permit fear, greed, or apathy to erode our system of criminal justice.
